ROMAN BRIDGE VIEWPOINT_

THE CHARM OF THE BRIDGE, A REFUGE FOR CONTEMPLATION AND REFLECTION

The view from the Roman Bridge invites contemplation and reflection. Eighty percent of its landscape is sky and river. The flow of water, usually gentle, creates a hypnotic effect. The vegetation moves to the rhythm of the current, and it’s a transit place for numerous aquatic birds. These all create the most melodious atmosphere in the city, giving rise to a space for listening.

A changing landscape, watery murmur, the walk or the lingering gaze from the bridge leaves no one indifferent. During the cold months, it becomes a passing point, in the evenings and dawns, for starlings and jackdaws that form large clouds with truly beautiful flight choreographies. In turn, the night generates whispers among the branches, hidden movements only occasionally broken by the hooting of the tawny owl or the appearance of owls that inhabit the heritage buildings.

The warmth of temperatures returns chlorophyll to the riverside forest that shelters the passage of the Tormes. And, in this brief chronicle, we must not leave out the rain. Taking shelter under an umbrella and watching water fall on water, when infinite concentric circles form on the Tormes, is an experience to share.

VIEWS FROM THE ROMAN BRIDGE VIEWPOINT_

An almost natural watchtower given its integration into the riverbank, allowing a double vision, upstream and downstream.

Upstream: Towers and Dome of La Clerecía (former Royal College of the Holy Spirit or Holy Spirit of the Company of Jesus), Bell gable of the Royal Chapel of San Jerónimo of the University of Salamanca, profile of the Cathedrals, Ceña del Muradal, Enrique Estevan Bridge, Towers of the New Church of Arrabal, National Tourism Parador, building of moderate modernist style by the architect and engineer of French origin Carlos Grasset y Echevarría (Bridge Square).

Downstream: Peña Celestina, Faculty of Sciences building, houses of the Wall, Sánchez Fabrés Bridge.

Both waters: Riverside vegetation from inside the water to the outside: reeds, cattails, willows, alders, poplars, white poplars, and ash trees.
