JARDÍN DE LA MERCED VIEWPOINT_
THE OPEN HORIZON TO THE TORMES
The Jardín de la Merced Viewpoint is located in the southern part of Salamanca, next to the River Tormes, in a landscaped area between the Faculty of Mathematics and the Faculty of Sciences. Access is through a garden with cypress and cedar trees and a pergola covered in mauve flowers, which gradually opens the way to a fully open river landscape.
From this point, the viewpoint opens onto the sky, the river, and a broad horizon where the city and nature meet. It is a place especially associated with sunset contemplation, when the light travels along the riverbed and transforms the scene into one of the most distinctive views in southern Salamanca. The presence of the river, the riverside vegetation, and the birdlife all contribute to a calm and ever-changing atmosphere throughout the day.
The surroundings also retain a strong historical connection with the river, which for centuries has been a space of passage and daily activity. Today, this heritage coexists with a natural landscape where water, vegetation, and university architecture create an area of significant scenic value.
VIEWS FROM THE JARDÍN DE LA MERCED VIEWPOINT_
The view is organised from left to right. On the left stands Enrique Estevan Bridge, next to the Church of Santiago. In the centre rises the Roman Bridge, with the Arrabal district in the background and the Parador de Turismo on higher ground. At the foot of the viewpoint, San Juan de Alcázar slope descends towards the river. On the right appears Sánchez Fabrés Bridge, while in the distance Vistahermosa and the Los Montalvos communications tower can be seen.
A wide landscape where the river structures the view and connects Salamanca’s historical and urban landmarks.
