ROOFS OF WISDOM: PERSPECTIVES OF A UNIVERSITY CITY

A sea of clay, where roof tiles form perfectly aligned waves. This is the abstract impression that emerges when leaning out from this ducal vantage point. The beauty of intersecting lines creates a perspective that feels chaotic, yet harmonious and uniform at the same time. The smooth textures of the walls are completed by the sinuosity of the rooftops. Here, angles define the slopes of the roofs—some simple, others double—channeling rainwater down into the granite that supports them.

We find dozens of small cells, which are windows, behind which study and learning take place: a hive of knowledge. Calle Compañía unfolds like a gorge through which university life flows. When spring and summer exams arrive, students are accompanied by the sound of swifts and lesser kestrels. The birds trace their own invisible lines across the sky, occupying the blue void above the rooftops that covers our days.

How many thousands of students across the centuries have walked these streets? What were their dreams? Where did their knowledge lead them?

VIEWS FROM MONTERREY VIEWPOINT_

Monterrey Palace gives its name to this viewpoint, which frames the southern part of the city along Calle Compañía. In the foreground stands the Convent of the Agustinas, with the adjoining Colegio de España. Opposite it, on the other side of the street, is the Convent of the Madre de Dios. In the scenic background rises the large building of the Pontifical University, with the arches of its façade on display, all of it framed and protected by the dome and towers of the Clerecía.

The most attentive observers will not only notice the dome and the tower of the New Cathedral, but also a buttress and its flying buttress behind the dome of the Church of San Sebastián.
