IERONIMUS VIEWPOINT_

SYMPHONY OF CATHEDRALS: BETWEEN STONE AND SKY

Here we find the impression of an operatic stage of the cathedrals, the architectural symphony of open space, open sky, open atmosphere. The sensation provoked here observes this confluence of the material and the intangible is one of humility before the magnitude of architectural art. Also of admiration for those who raised these buildings from effort and intellect, from faith and constancy. It’s always disconcerting to think that six centuries ago, sandstone was turned into a heritage of inconceivable dimensions.

The “Mocha” Tower is a weightless gaze over the Tormes. The river is situated in the interval between the bridges, between two times: the arrival of modernity with the so-called Enrique Esteban, and the Roman, origin of the recognized and common canvas of the riverbank. The islands covered with bulrushes, willows, and reeds give the touch of vital color. There, the song of nightingales and herons awaits the walker.

The horizon line, where buildings deform it, reveals its profile of mountains on clear days, with the Peña de Francia nuanced by mists. Between city and distances, the cereal steppes and the holm oak dehesas in the distance. The Charro countryside begins towards the south.

VIEWS FROM THE IERONIMUS VIEWPOINT_

The name Ieronimus encompasses the tour to be made through the Cathedral Towers, in honor of Don Jerónimo de Perigueux, Spanish bishop appointed for Salamanca when the Diocese was restored in 1102 and in charge of the construction of the Church of Santa María of the Old Cathedral.

This 180º vision begins at the Bell Tower, the central nave, and the Dome of the New Cathedral. It continues in the Cathedral Archive, the Rooster Tower, and the Cloister of the Old Cathedral. Upstream of the Tormes river, the Felipe VI Bridge can be glimpsed next to the tower of the former Convent of San Isidoro, belonging to the Sánchez Fabrés Foundation. The Enrique Estevan Bridge gives continuity to the image of the river, with the Ceñas del Arenal and del Muradal among the islands of riverside vegetation. The Towers of the New Church of the Holy Trinity or del Arrabal stand out, with the Parador Building confronted, on the opposite shore, with the Church of Santiago. The Roman Bridge closes the angle of observation.
